Around 2019–2020, we were seeing a pattern of premature evaporator coil failures on systems we’d installed only a few years earlier. Coastal homes were the worst: salt air, humidity, and the copper-fin coil design weren’t a great match in Florida. We started looking at every major manufacturer’s coil platform.

Lennox had committed (publicly) something on the order of $50 million to developing their Quantum coil, an all-aluminum micro-channel design that resists the corrosion that historically eats copper coils in Florida. After installing them, the failure pattern stopped.

We made the call to go all-in on Lennox. Six years later, that’s still the call we’d make.

What the Quantum coil actually does in Florida

Florida is hard on AC coils for three reasons:

1. Salt air. Anything within 3–5 miles of the Gulf is exposed to salt-laden air that corrodes traditional copper-fin coils.
2. Humidity. The indoor coil is wet most of the year, accelerating any corrosion in the metal.
3. Runtime. Florida ACs run 8–10 months a year. More hours = more cycles = more wear on whatever metal you’ve got.

The Quantum coil is all-aluminum (not copper-fin), which fundamentally changes the corrosion chemistry. We pair it with coastal coil coatings on installs within a few miles of the Gulf for additional protection.

Lennox lineup: Merit vs Elite vs Signature

Lennox sells three tiers in residential. Here’s what we actually install and who we install each for:

Merit Series (entry-level)

Elite Series (mid-tier, our most common install)

Signature Series (premium)

• Variable-capacity (inverter) equipment, SL and XC series

• Right for: larger homes, humidity-sensitive families, anyone planning to stay 10+ years

Lennox vs Trane vs Carrier vs Goodman: the honest take

None of these are bad brands. Installation quality matters more than brand: a perfectly installed Goodman will outperform a sloppily installed Lennox. But if installation quality is held constant, Lennox is what we’d put in our own homes.

Lennox heat pumps in Sarasota

For most Sarasota replacements, we install Lennox heat pumps rather than straight-cool systems with electric strip heat. Sarasota’s mild winters are well within heat pump range: there are maybe 5–10 mornings a year cold enough to need backup heat, and heat pumps handle those fine.

The Elite-series two-stage heat pump is our most-installed system in Sarasota single-family homes.

What about mini-splits?

For ductless applications (additions, garages, mother-in-law suites), we install Gree mini-splits in 2026. We used to install Mitsubishi, and they’re still a great product, but pricing and availability moved us to Gree as the better day-to-day option for our customers.

Thermostats: what we actually put in homes

• Sensi: our value pick. Reliable, app-based, works with nearly every system. What we put in most Merit/Elite installs unless the homeowner asks for something specific.
• Honeywell Vision Pro 8000: the workhorse for customers who want a clean, programmable thermostat without the smart-home complexity.
• Lennox S40: when pairing with a Signature/variable-capacity Lennox system, the S40 unlocks the full system features (humidity control, equipment monitoring, multi-stage logic). Don’t pair a non-Lennox thermostat with variable-capacity Lennox equipment if you can avoid it.

Lennox warranty: what’s covered, what isn’t

Lennox residential equipment typically carries:

• 10-year parts warranty when registered within 60 days of install
• Lifetime compressor warranty on Signature-series equipment (registered)
• No labor warranty from the manufacturer, that’s where the installing dealer matters

Green Cooling extends our own labor warranty on top of the manufacturer parts warranty. Make sure to register your equipment within 60 days; un-registered Lennox equipment drops to a 5-year warranty.

Where Lennox falls short, honestly

1. Pricing is premium. Lennox isn’t the cheapest option upfront. The math works out over the lifespan, but the sticker is higher than Goodman or Comfort Maker.
2. Dealer network matters more. Lennox’s premium lineup (especially Signature variable-capacity) is only as good as the installer. Make sure your dealer is doing proper Manual J load calculations and commissioning the system.
3. Some parts have longer lead times. Specialty Signature-series parts occasionally have longer order windows than commodity Goodman parts.

What if I want a different brand?

We sometimes install Comfort Maker (ICP / Carrier family) as a secondary brand for customers who want a quality system at a lower price point than Lennox. If you’re set on Trane or Carrier specifically, we’d recommend finding a dealer who specializes in that brand; installation expertise matters more than picking the “right” brand from the wrong installer.
